All About Scrying

Before humans communicated with written language, they used images to express their lived experiences. Scrying is the practice of utilizing images to access impressions already located in our subconscious mind.

I find that many people scry automatically when observing an abstract piece of art. Just as a young child has not yet taken on the habit of judging their own impressions of the world, our own childlike nature can playfully step forward when we engage in the act of scrying.

Think about times when you’ve stared up at the clouds in the sky, imagining the images you see, free from judgment. It is this same relaxed, observant and childlike state that allows us to communicate with the creative, feeling parts of our psyche.

This creative, right-brain part of us is also where messages from our intuition, Higher Self and spiritual guides can emerge. The key is to keep an open mind and to set aside our judging mind for the moment, giving these insights time to emerge and develop.

Of course, we always keep a healthy, balanced discernment regarding what comes through for us- we should only listen to the messages rooted in wisdom and love.

How to scry:

  1. Dim the lights. Take a moment to find a relaxed posture and calm your mind and body with five slow, deep breaths.
  2. If you are seeking guidance, ask for what you seek.
  3. Observe the image you are scrying into and notice any insights that emerge. Take the first insight that comes to you, before any second-guessing or judgement arises. Ask your judging thoughts to step aside until you are done with this exercise.
  4. You can write down insights that come to you, accepting anything and everything that arises rooted in wisdom and love.
  5. Turn the image to view it at different angles. You can also set different images side by side in different combinations to see what new insights arise.
  6. The same images can be saved for use at a later date and might convey new insights.
  7. Reflect upon the insights you have received, inviting your balanced discernment to join you as you do so, assisting you in integrating those insights into your practical life.
